August is Psoriasis Awareness Month!

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that has skin cells piling up and thickening while blood flow increases, which causes red, scaly patches to appear on the skin (eyelids, ears, mouth and lips, skin folds, hands, elbow and feet and nails, etc.). There are 5 types of psoriasis and the most common is called Plaque.

Triggers – Individuals must have a combination of genes, that cause psoriasis, and “triggers” (stress, injury to skin, certain medications (including ibuprofen), and infections).

Treatments – Everyone is different, what works on one may not work on another.  Diet and nutrition (some find eliminating certain foods help clear psoriasis), herbal remedies, mind and body therapies (relieves stress levels), and exercise (risk of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes is increased when you have psoriasis).

Complimentary and Alternative Therapy

Reflexology – relieves stress and eliminates toxins in the body. Skin is the largest elimination organ and many toxins are eliminated through the skin by perspiration. Therapy includes working on all elimination organs (adrenals (stress reduction and reduces inflammation), liver, kidneys, lymph, intestines and lungs).

With psoriatic arthritis, the hands and feet may be too tender or inflamed to be worked on, so we choose the option that is best for each individual. Even with lesions on your hands or feet, you may have a reflexology session, provided there is some area to work on. A good reflexologist will help you with home techniques that can be practice between sessions.

Reflexology for psoriasis isn’t for everyone, but it is a safe treatment that provides some relief. Psoriasis sufferers who have had reflexology psoriasis treatments feel they are of great benefit in relieving some of the discomfort. Most people feel that a reflexology session brings about relaxation the same way a massage would.

Reflexology reduces stress and can help lessen your psoriasis symptoms due to your immunity being boosted.
